I'm inclined to think that you're correct about it being a Nelly Moser. Check out this link -- it shows both varieties:

It doesn't look like Nelly Moser to me.My Nelly Moser has a different coloured centre and much wider pink stripes. Very little white. Is it in the shade? If so maybe that is why it is paler.

My Dr. Ruppel is the same as Scoutsadie's and I have a John Paul II that's even paler than this clematis in question.

Yes! That's the very clematis I picked up last year unlabeled and on sale at Lowe's so I'm anxious to follow this thread to find out (1) what it is and (2) what care it needs.

I was naturally more interested in the plant's survival and adjustment than it's flowering, so I potted it in a clay pot and set the pot in the ground where I wanted it, hoping that the root system would develop. Has anyone tried this technique?

It's still in the pot and it blossomed this year, which surprised me. The first set of blooms were 5-6 inches, those on the plant now are smaller.

Any tips/suggestions are appreciated. Molie

See below...my Dr. Ruppel also has a darker fuschia stripe, but I just posted thinking it wasn't Dr. Ruppel, because I expected mine to look more like yours!! Ha!! Guess we are both stumped!!

I also planted a Dr. Ruppel, and got a fabulous show this spring of white and pink flowers, which made me think it was Nelly Moser. Now I am getting a secondary bloom of purple Dr. Ruppel flowers. It must have been the weather??

The more photos I see of clems, the more they seem to vary, possibly with ;climate, soil, age all affecting their color. According to 'clematis on the web', Dr. Rupppel should produce large pink flowers with deep red-pink stripe,filaments white with cream-beige anthers. The photos posted by greenthumbgirl don't look at all like Dr. Ruppel. I planted over 20 clematis this spring ,so far I have two that have been definitly mislabeled,(and the labels were firmly attached to the stake that was stapled securely in the pot) Not all of them bloomed this year. I wonder how many more surprises are in store. It sure would be nice if we could depend on the labelling to be correct.

I thought mine was Nelly Moser.but I also bought dr ruppel.One did not return& I thought this tag said nelly moser.These were the $3.95 starts from walmart last year.

Its grown in hanging basket& I did not trim.I also thought the bloom had more white last year& was not as big.
Jackmani made it and I need to pot it cause its in a small pot.
