I think there is always hope with Clematis....

And in your case, all is not lost yet. As long as the roots are alive, it should send up new shoots.
Did you plant it deep with at least 1 or 2 buds below the soil? That should doubly increase your chances.

My very first Clematis "died". It turned brown and I cut it down and never saw it again and totally forgot about it.
Then one day, 2 or 3 years later, I walked out and saw huge white flowers on my fence. That's an extreme, but there's always hope.

I agree with Wanda. The tops on clematis can die and the crown and roots survive with no issue. Since all clematis should be pruned as type IIIs the first year or so, just consider it as mother nature doing the pruning for you.
