kitchen peninsula

We are building a new small corridor kitchen as part of a living/dining room renovation. The space is not really large, but should be big enough. We have about 11' x 12' of space in front of the peninsula for a living area and a larger area to the side for dining. There is a long wall of glass doors leading on to the back garden which helps visually extend the space. But how can we ensure, with colours and cabinet treatment, that the kitchen wall and peninsula do not overwhelm the space? We want it to feel like a living area with a kitchen, not the other way around. Any suggestions? Thanks
