Disease

We have recently been cutting back a 20 year old clematis and while doing so came accross a hole about 3/8 inches in diameter, sap is oozing from this hole and on the sap we found maggots. The area where the sap is has started to turn mouldy. Has anyone any suggestions on what it is and what we can do to save the clematis or should we take it down? I've attached a link to a photograph of the trunk.
