Do you selectively prune/thin your Clematis?

I transplanted a Clematis 'Polish Spirit' to a raised box, and I would like to remove the stems growing toward the front to create a neater appearance.

Is it common practice to selectively-prune Clematis for this reason? It seems like a sacrilege in the Clematis world. I know it will reduce the number of blooms but I'm willing to sacrifice some blooms to keep it a little tidier.
