Oh~ One more thing. My house is red brick with white trim so I would prefer something other than white that is still old-fashioned/cottage-y!

My first thought was Sweet Autumn Clematis (its a very vigorous grower and usually scented when in bloom, mine smelled like baking sugar cookies)but its flowers are white.

Maybe a viticella like Venosa Violacea> Vigorous, purple and white veined flowers. Mine grows and blooms in part shade. Sadly, unscented, but nice nonetheless.

Or perhaps Minuet (similar looking flower, but more pink than purple) would work with your brick better? I don't grow this one, but as it is in the same family (viticella) as VV it should perform similarily.

I have Duchess of Albany planted on the north side of my house and it does very well. It is a very vigorous grower for me but not as rampant or seedy at all like Clematis terniflora is for me.

If you want a monster plant that won't have the problem of being seedy and still have a fragrance, try Triternata Rubromarginata.

As for your idea that clematis like shade at their feet, that is fallacy. They like mulched roots because it aids in keeping the soil moisture levels consistent. They tolerate sun on their feet very well provided they are mulched well and kept watered.
