When there is only one Nursery in the whole USA fortunate to have something that no one has ...they can ask for a premium price of $22 ...as the clematis become more commonly sold then the price will come down with competition..if you really want this clematis...then that isn't an exorbitant amount IMHO..I've spent more for a hanging basket of Fuschia that I couldn't keep alive for longer than two weeks in my hot climate...treat yourself and enjoy...His plants are nice ..you won't be disappointed...Jeanne

Yeah, Jeanne, you're right....$22 for the plant isn't so much that I would mind paying it if that were all there was to it. But, minimum purchase is $36, then almost $20 for shipping on top of it!! Talk about exhorbitant costs! And you'd think that the second year out more people would have this new plant. Guess I'll wait another year.

Yep, PDN seems to be the only one with this clematis, but even when the plant in question is more readily available, PDN tends to be higher priced than most other nurseries. Like Jean, if it is something I want, then I pay whatever it costs from whomever.

Tony is a great guy..he is well known in the plant world..his travels are infamous and his catalogues a hoot!!...He's great buds with a guy that owns a nursery not far from me..they are always seeking out hard to find plants and seeds...he's traveled all over the world collecting plants..so he is a bit higher than most but has spent alot of money and time to acquire these plants to offer them to us...Jeanne

Jeanne, you make some good points and I do think his catalog is a hoot! You also hit the nail on the head and I was going to add the bit about Tony's travels in my post but decided against it. I have always thought that the price of the plants at PDN was directly related to and subsidized his plant collecting travels. However I think the prices of some of the more common stuff that he sells are also higher for the same reason. I have no issue paying more for something when it is unique and rare, but if I can find the more common stuff he sells at another nursery, it is almost always lower. There is a great nursery in Sanford, NC that sells some of the stuff Tony does at much lower prices. I usually go by both nurseries when I am down that way and pick and choose what I want from the two nurseries. I have and will continue to purchase plants from PDN but it will be those that I can't find elsewhere. I have even purchased clematis from PDN!

Ditto Miguel!!...I've bought plants from him that I can't find anywhere!!..And "common" plants at other places..I am all for bargain hunting!!...Jeanne
