Clematis cling by wrapping their "Petioles" around a support...it's similar to what you consider a tendril on most vines..they need something to wrap around...Hence the use of nettings,wire fencing....Hope that helps...Jeanne

Um... nevermind. A quick search answered that one for me, should have thought of that first.

Several people on here have used the netting on the trunks of their trees for the Clematis to climb up on!
