It is not easily feasible to maintain this vine at a specific height. It will get as big as it wants to get. You can train it to grow more laterally along the fence as opposed to up into trees, etc., but any pruning back during the growing season will remove any flowering potential.

This is a vine that should be cut back hard (third set of buds from the base) each season. At least that early hard prune allows you the opportuinity to direct new growth in the direction you want. But don't ignore it!! It can very easily grow fast enough to get out of hand if you are too late with your attention.

I slice mine back all the way to the ground to keep it somewhat shorter. You can also prune it a second time after it has grown some - this has it producing stems again but flowering on somewhat shorter stems. I do this to one of mine due to the size of its trellis which it overwhelmed the first few years of its life there.

It finally got warm enough around here so I pruned her yesterday. What's left is about 2 ft. I hope she will be ok!
