Clematis Rouge Cardinal

Hello everyone.

I want to try a clematis this year. I believe this might be a nice one for the space I have is which is right next to the house, full sun southern exposure. I have a nice wooden trellis that is about 5 feet high in place already.

I'm hoping that if someone knows of a smallish clematis that might do better in these conditions they would suggest one or if you think this guy will be fine in a very warm, very sunny spot you could let me know.

Right now the flowerbed is reasonably good soil, well drained. I have not amended it but that's on the list for soon maybe next weekend. Thanks in advance.

Kate..sounds like a plan!!..A beginning clematis grower should start out with the pruning group 3's/Viticellas to get their feet wet..they are more vigorous and almost full proof..if you are into reds..you might consider "Madame Julia Correvon", "Kermensia" so many to chose from..I don't have "Rouge Cardinal" in my gardens...you can always research for clematis on COTW..aka Clematis on the Web...click on Search and put in pruning group 3's and the color you like in Tepal...Jeanne

Won't the Viticellas get too big for a 5' trellis?

What about some of the new short Clems by Raymond Evison?
I know there is a reddish one. Can't remember the name.

Yes you are right!!..I don't know how I missed the part about the 5 foot trellis..It's Evison Patio Series you are referring to...wasn't one of them Picardy, Versailles and Cezanne?..You can search according to height as well..thanks for bring that point up as I totally overlooked it...Jeanne

They say two to three feet but I bet they would grow taller if not pruned hard.

The Evison patio types grow bigger in the ground then they do in pots, even when cut to the ground. I have several of the Evisons. 'Bourbon' is very nice. 'Cezanne' is gorgeous. 'Picardy'--the flowers are a bit smaller. 'Rhapsody' and 'Wisley' are very reliable and have excellent repeat.
