I would like to interplant some clematis with my roses this year. The problem is, I don't really know where to start with clematis. Are there varieties that are forgiving and not-too-high maintenance? I definitely don't want to have to be pruning all the time, maybe once-a-year or twice.

Is there such a clem? Please tell me now if I am barking up the wrong tree with my desire to grow clems! Recommend any good books that are not overwhelming to read and understand?
