Hi Joe,

If the stalk died after only 1-2 months, the berries probably didn't hold any seeds. If the berries are about pea sized, that is it. If they grew to marble size, then seeds developed. Usually, the seeds need at least 6-9 months after pollination to successfully germinate. The berry can still be green when you harvest, as long as they ahve had their time. I do prefer to wait until the berry starts changing color, but sometimes that can take 14 months.

thanks Craig. I put the stalk in a small plastic bag with a crab apple (on the ethylene gas principle) and the two bigger pods are turning red. The smallest one, about the size of a pea, is still green and is starting to shrivel up.
