Short long-blooming clematis

Hi,

Looking for ideas for 4 to 5-foot clematis to climb several lattice obelisks. Hopefully something with long bloom time and perhaps double flowers?. I would love to find one listed on Brushwood's site - clematis texensis - but seem to be striking out. Any ideas of where I may be able to get this one?

So far I have on order Rooguchi, Duchess of Albany and crispa. Do these have a good bloom time? Any special problems I should watch for? (These I ordered from Klehm's Song Sparrow - hopefully a reputable place?). Thank you all for your expertise. This is a terrific site for anyone but especially for those of us who are novices to clematis.

Piluu has remained a rather compact and shorter clematis in my garden. So far however I have never seen double flowers on it. Konigskind is another clematis that remains shorter in stature but it doesn't have double blooms. In fact I can't think of any plants that have double flowers that bloom for extended periods of time. There might be some type IIs but since those are not my cup of tea I don't keep up on them too much.

For what it's worth, my texensis last year was well over five feet tall.

One of the longest blooming clematis in my garden is Petit Faucon. Doesn't have double blooms and isn't a clinging clematis, but it does bloom from April to August for me. I keep mine contained in a spiral topiary form. Another long blooming one is Harlow Carr.

The Evison Patio/Boulevard collection has gotten mixed reviews by various posters on this forum in the past. Some have had success with them and others haven't.

I'm no expert by a LONG shot, but the Evison patio/Boulevard collection are supposed to be long bloomers! I got my in very abused condition last year, so I'm hoping it does better this year.

If you are having problems finding something you love in particular you might wish to check out Joycreek...
I am particularly looking at some of his Japanese Varieties...some of those don't get too tall...Doubles..you'll be getting pruning group 2's and you can check out his site for those as well..
Also, don't forget to check out COTW's search function..you can put in 1.0-1.5 meters in the mature height section and it will bring up all clematis that are short..Hope this helps...Jeanne

I planted Pilauu (sp) on a short obelisk at the suggestion of Debbie at Silver Star Vinery.. It isn't mature yet but she highly recommened it.

Clematis "Piilu" has been the worse performer of all my clematis in my gardens..I am lucky to get about 2-3 blooms a year...Jeanne

Too bad Jeanne. She blooms quite nicely in my garden. I just wish I could get the double blooms on her that I have seen in pictures.

That is beautiful Miguel...I probably got a bad one from that vendor...the Multi-Blue I got was just as bad!!

My Roogucci bloomed all summer long last year. I'm so impressed with this one. The only bad thing about it is its propensity for getting powdery mildew. Mine is already over three feet tall (second year in the ground) and we're still waiting for spring to kick in. All my other clems are at or under one foot.

You know what Tony Avent says about plants. That you truly can't grow it until you have killed it three times. Try again from another vendor Jeanne and see if that helps! If any clematis of mine only produced two or three blooms a season, they would be food for the compost pile. There are too many ones out there that I like to save room for one that doesn't perform.

Lindyb, I know what you mean about Roguchi and mildew. Last year however I found a Neem based product that prevented mine from getting mildew.

I just got Piilu yesterday. Its nice to see pics of it since it was a surprise. My husband just liked the name, lol. I hope it does well for me here.

Congrats Kristy..You do know it means "Little Duckling"..I am seriously considering moving mine..maybe it's not happy where it is and then again like Miguel said I might should try one from another Vendor...Jeanne

My favorite short ones are Pink Climador which goes 4-6 feet and reblooms... and Empress which has 6 foot or a little more full of double blooms. I am uploading a photo of my Empress , taken today!

Klehm's is one of the best.
