Clematis on the Web says 'any aspect' which means sun or shade. Most clematis like some sun so I wouldn't put it in a spot that will be shady all day.

Thanks. I am never sure what that exactly means. The area I have in mind is bright but not directly sunny except some dappled sun in late afternoon.

I'm not familiar with Mrs. Robert Brydon but from the information on Clematis on the Web I would feel comfortable locating it in an area like you describe. Someone else should be along soon and may have different advice.

My Mrs. RB is in pretty much full sun and is happy there. In my experience, few clematis will bloom without 4 or so hours of sun. Some are happier in part shade than others.

I didn't notice any when I was working near it last summer, but the smaller flowered clems are more likely to attract bees than the larger-flowered clems in my experience.

I have quite a number of bee-attracting plants near the front door and in various garden beds. I've found that unless I am actually bothering them by working on plants they are trying to feed on that they have no interest in me and just want to get on with feeding. Yellow jackets on the other hand . . . ouch!

Sounds good then. Not fond of yellow jackets either!
