Transplanting clematis--good idea?

I was just surveying the 7 clematis planted along the back fence. Some have been there for years, others were added last year. I never noticed before that there is an extra one on the east half of the fence and that there is a missing one on the west half of the fence (explains why I always got more blooms on the east side, doesn't it--duh!).

Anyway, I'm wondering how tranplantable an established clematis is. I would like to move the "extra" one over to the other side, but I'm not sure about transplanting this time of the year. Nothing is blooming yet, but they have all grown several feet high. Still cool weather here, but will probably be in the 60s starting next week.

Oh, the plant I'd like to move is a Jackmani, but I'm not sure if it is the "superba" Jackmani or the older one.

What do you think? If it is a bad idea, I'll just buy another one to add to the sparse side of the fence.

Why move one of your existing 7 clematis when there are tons of other clematis out there that you can trial in the location? :) I say go for it and purchase another clematis, but of course, realize that I am a clematis lover.

Hmmm--that is one way to look at it. LOL

You might be right. And since today is cold and rainy, I can't go out in the garden. Might just be the right day to search online for the perfect clematis.

You know, the one I was thinking of moving might not be a Jackmani. Years ago I planted a white Henryi (or something like that). It doesn't bloom very often--not sure why--but I remember it surprising me again a bit later in the season last year. That very well might be the "extra" clem I spotted.

My clematis have done better when moved in the fall, rather than in the spring. Although they survive just fine, they recover better and are more vigorous. On the other hand, I'd also just buy another one and plant it in that spot.
