what is maroon & black with 6 or 8 legs, grows like a tick, bleeds maroon and loves tomatoes and eggplant?

ok, here's some more info. its head is black and the body is mostly maroon I can't remember exactly, they grossed me out as I squished them. the legs were underneath the body not on sticking out the sides. It starts off small just like a tick and then blows up. I think they are coming from orange eggs laid in groups of, say 10-12, I could be off on the number because of the 'heebie jeebie factor' when I squished 'em. Last year they stuck to the eggplant mostly, only late in the season did they move on a couple tomatoes. But this year they are really going after the tomatoes and have already killed 2 plants and stunted about 4 more (late start, small plants aren't dealing with the stress)

I guess what is most important, will Sevin kill them? I sprinkled some on tonight but they were still moving around even after a couple hours.
