My Sweet Autumn has been a prolific grower and bloomer in the past but last year the majority of the leaves were covered with tiny brown tunnels. I called the Morton Arboretum Plant Clinic and they said it was wasp larvae (the "good kind" that eat bad bugs, not the bad kind that try to eat our b-b-q) so they said not to do anything. Well, it got uglier and uglier as the summer progressed and we were having a wedding reception in our backyard so around mid-July I cut back maybe half of the vines, maybe more. Then at the end of summer I was so disgusted with how it looked that I pulled the whole thing down. I usually leave the vine up through the winter and take it down in early spring. When I checked on it a few days ago I didn't see any green shoots. I know we've had a late spring, but the clem in my front garden has almost ten inches of growth heading up the trellis already. Did I kill my S.A. by cutting it down in summer instead of spring?
