Companion Plants

Loropetulum, Crape Myrtle and....

Please help! In an attempt to get back to normalcy as soon as possible after Katrina, I planted a Crape Myrtle in a large empty bed with a 5 loropetulums around it. Only to discover that I have no idea what else to do!

The problem is the bed is in the front yard. We lost so many trees/shrubs/privacy, that I'd like to have at least something with "winter interest" or evergreen (Zone 8, MS gulf coast) since Myrtle looks pretty pittiful w/o leaves :-)

indian hawthorn or schillings or dwarf walters viburnum,and by all means try the knockout roses. You will love them!Then you could add new gold lantana around front of bed.It looks ratty for only about a month around here. The knockouts bloom continuosly.You could also use a nice sago and underplant it with the new gold lantana.If this is too colorful you could opt for a juniper groundcover.

Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans) are very nice small evergreen trees and have the most wonderful scent when in bloom.
