roses combined with clematis

I recently bought two pilgrim roses to grow on a arch. I was wondering if i could grow some clematis on the same arch to make it look fuller.

Any pros and cons please.

If i am going to add a clematis i would like it to be a white one any suggestions?

Donna..I grow tons of climbing roses with Clematis and they are stunning and the most perfect union ever as their requirements are the same...plant about 6 inches from your Rambler...For the best white..you must get clematis "Huldine"..Here I have her with Climbing rosa "Red Eden"...Jeanne

That is beautiful! I ordered a Huldine and it came in acouple weeks ago and I think i'll pair it with Polish Spirit. I only have luck with knock out roses, I can't seem to kill them but the others dead within a year.

Another white you must consider is Arctic Queen. She's a gorgeous double--fluffier look than most clems have. And a very willing bloomer.

Jeanne, that is gorgeous. I have huldine in the backyard, this will be its second year. It is def. a keeper! Maybee i should get some more.

Kate i like the looks of arctic queen, will this clematis get very big or will it stay shorter?

My Arctic Queens are in their second year, so I can't say how tall it will get for sure. The one that has been thriving from the beginning is probably about 5-6 ft tall right now (and has a ton of buds on it!). The second almost did not survive its first year, but is very healthy this year but shorter as a result--maybe 3 ft tall. I would expect the taller one to grow another foot or two as the season progresses--which would put it in the 6-8 ft range listed at helpmefind.com.

It really is a gorgeous clem--the kind that makes people stop and ask what is it.

I have many climbing roses paired with clematis. Golden Showers rose with Prince Charles clematis is stunning. But If I had planted two Prince Charles, it would have covered the rose entirley, then started on the house. Some clematis are delicate and climb roses well, others seems to want to smother them.
Henryii and Henry Kelsey rose are another of my favorite.
Iceburg climbing and Fireworks Clematis. thumbs up.
