Karl, in my experience, clematis are not overly sensitive to careful root disturbance, especially when dormant ... so, go ahead and separate your seedlings, that's if you don't mind having to grow on hundreds of plants? Otherwise, just remember that you just might be sacrificing some real beauties!

Its my fault really, it was my first time growing seeds and all the information said that I'd get a fairly erratic germination over a few season. What I got was about half come up in late autumn and the rest come up in spring. While I'm not complaining I'm struggling to grow them out for appraisal!

They are amazingly tough as the Autumn seedlings froze solid for three days and still came through okay.
