New Clematis planted, struggling

We planted a new clematis but did not cut it back at all after planting. The top growth is about 18 inches or so. It looks like the leaves are fairly limp and struggling. Is it better to cut the clematis back to maybe the second node and let it settle?

How often are you watering and does it have any protection from afternoon sun?

All newly planted clematis should be planted deeper than they were in the nursery pot, in a big well worked hole without root competition and cut back, hard.

It hugely benefits them.

They do also need to be kept evenly moist...
