I have both Cassis and florida sieboldii but both are tiny from bare roots so I can't comment on garden performance but I do have high hopes.....

I have Cassis I purchased bareroot last year and it is up and growing this year.

I have had horrible luck with Sieboldii. For two years, it has suffered tremendous wilt where the stems and flowers go limp and don't recover right as the plant was ready to flower. I have summarily removed it from the garden as a result. I am unsure whether the plant was the issue or the soil in the area it was planted in was the problem (clematis planted in the same area have done well with no issues) or what the situation was but I have heard others have similar issues with it. I might give it a try at some point, but with all the other great ones out there and limited space to put it, it may never be replanted in my garden.

Jeanne, thanks so much for posting the pics I enjoyed them. That clematis is even prettier than Ive seen in pictures! Ill definitly add that to my wish list.

nckvilledudes, sounds like you've got clematis wilt. Im not sure what the cause is, but I have 4 clematis growing on a big trellis and all of them are fine but one. Not sure which one it is though cause only 2 are blooming now, here they are:

One is nelly moser, and the other is supposed to be Niobe, but dosen't look as red as it did last year!? Don't know what happened there, but the purple color looks better with the nelly moser though. The other two I have are Will Goodwin, and Multi-blue. Haven't seen any blooms from them yet. One of them looks kind of wilty! Poop, we will see, if it does something ill post a pic. Im sure you all know what they look like though!

Jeanne, I love my florida sieboldi and your florida alba plena is a gorgeous thing!

I think that I was lucky with the sieboldi, when I bought it I didn't know it was supposed to be difficult to grow and I just plopped it in the ground. By luck, I must have placed it in a spot that it was happy in. It is as pretty as the photo's and mine has grown very well. I have no idea if it really deserves it's diva reputation.

Carol..it' not difficult to grow IMHO..I think they just don't like colder zones..they adore the hot sun here...

Jessica, my plant of Sieboldii did wilt but it wasn't clematis wilt as neither time have I had the black foliage and stems that are characteristic of this disease.

Ok, you guys are starting to scare me, so florida sieboldi is hard to grow? Im not a clematis expert, but I grow lots of stuff with minimal problems. My house gets tons of sun. Notice at the bottom of my pic I have a garden decoration setting at the base of my clematis to shade the roots. Now if I got the sieboldi, what would be the best place to plant it? In full sun, same as the others, or is it special? They don't really sell the really fancy ones at nurserys around here, I guess what im asking is, is there any special requirments for growing this one, before I spend the money and kill it!?

I think that the clematis in the pic is Dr. Ruppel. I bought it at lowes so it was probably mis-labeled. But thanks for telling me, its nice to know the correct name! I think I like the one I have better than Nelly moser anyway, so that worked out well for me!

Jessica, Florida Sieboldii has the reputation of being a more difficult variety of clematis. Don't know how it got that reputation--perhaps because initially most information about its culture came from the British clematarians who have trouble keeping a few varieties of clematis alive outside due to their cold and damp winters.

No one should ever be discouraged from trying to grow any clematis. My experience with this variety was not good but it could have been due to an inferior plant, the planting site or soil, or unnamed other reasons. Just like any plant and any variety of clematis, some people can grow a certain variety and others can't. I say go for it and give it a whirl and see what happens.

As for clematis, you can shade their roots with mulch and that will work better than a garden decoration since the mulch will decompose and add tilth to the soil.

I got a Clematis 'Sieboldii' (Clematis florida)yesterday. On the tag it says this plant has been adapted to stay indoors. This is my first clematis, and i have no idea what to do with it. Does anyone have experience growing this clematis indoor???

Most clematis are not going to do well inside unless inside means a conservatory or greenhouse. Without ideal light situations, clematis will get tall and lanky and fall victim to spider mites and other similar type of pests that houseplants without adequate light can get.

Thanks nckvilledudes. So it has not a lot of chances to live indoor. That's not good since it gets very cold here in winter. Maybe i can try to place it in the back yard during the warm months. And take it inside in winter.
