Now that I'm home from my after-work forum browsing, I got a chance to check on COTW.

It is very possible that yours is Will, especially the wavy edges. For some reason I was thinking that Will had a white stripe in the middle of the tepals, but I guess he hasn't.

That is what made me think it was Will, the frilly blooms and lack of a pronounced stripe. I'm glad that you think it is possible, Marie. I can't figure out who else it could possibly be. I need to keep a better accounting of who all I've planted! :-)

Your clematis' are just spectacular! Healthy, happy, full and beautiful. I have never seen such beautiful blue clems! My favorite clems are the blues. I was at a nursery a few years back and was looking at "Will Goodwin". I read that he was very prone to wilt. A lady who was picking up an Artic Queen that day told me the same thing. Does Will have a bad rep for no good reason?

Also I posed a question this morning about "Help Doing Something Wrong". If anyone has the time to read it and comment on my black thumbs I would be so appreciative. I need to learn to grown clems! I must grown clems! I have to grow clems!

Sue some clematis do have a reputation of being more prone to wilt than others. I don't ever remember reading that Will Goodwin was any more prone to wilt than the other type IIs. The thing is is that everyone can purchase the same clematis and have different results with it. Some of this may be due to differences in the genetics of the plant, the growing conditions, the amount and type of fertilizer that is used, how the clematis was planted, sun exposure, etc. The bottom line is that no one can guarantee what your specific experience will be with any clematis. The only real way to find out is through your own experience with it. Good luck!

Will Goodwin has never wilted for me. I have had it since 2003. Partly I think that it is because in my zone this one tends to be more a very late blooming type 3 than a type 2. It seldom has more than a stem or two that makes it through the winter. I get a bloom or two early and then some bloom again in September. Even though I don't get a lot of bloom, it is kind of nice to have one that blooms then. It's hard to get much rebloom here because the season is so short.

I have had quite a bit of trouble with other type twos looking really nice and healthy and getting big & ready to bloom and then getting the dreaded wilt. Most do not ever recover. Ernest Markham is another type 2 that loses most of its stems over winter. It also gives me enough rebloom (this one manages to bloom in late July into August) to make it worth keeping, but mostly I rely on the Viticellas.
