I would move it up potwise now since it will continue growing and soon enough get pot bound.

I am not real big on clay pots..as they seems to suck the moisture from the soil unless they are glazed on the inside?..Is yours Glazed?..Jeanne

It isn't glazed. I will transfer it to a glazed one. How far should I cut it back and should I fertilize it now? Should I pot up again when it starts to get root bound or wait until next spring? OH goodie...I quit using those clay ones years ago..It's been in that one gallon pot for a year..it should be rooted enough to go larger...If you want it to stay a potted clematis you should consider moving up to one that is no smaller than 14 inches by 14 for longevity and a permanent home..if your clematis is a pruning group 3..then go ahead and hard prune because in our warmer zones we can easily get 2-3 bloom cycles because of our longer growing season..so plant it a little bit deeper with some bonemeal in the planting hole and remember to keep moist for it's own good...I have a great way of repotting..what I do is fill the new pot almost half full making sure to press down the soil..because the soil will sink further down when watered and pressing down will make sure you have enough soil at the level you want and sit the one-gallon pot inside the new pot(or to where the one-gallon pot will sit at the right height for the new pot) in the middle then I fill soil up all around the sides and pack it down with my hands till it's up to the top of the old pot...I then pull my pot out and sprinkle bonemeal all around the inside of the hole and place in this custom made hole!!..I rarely have transplant shock this way..remember to add more soil on top and press to firm the soil....Jeanne

I won't hurt to prune it back by half...goodluck and let me know how you like my method..I use that method even in my gardens...Don't forget to give it some Alfalfa Tea and rose Fertilizer in about a month from now!! Jeanne

I finally got to try your potting up method today after unexpected company left.
It worked like a charm! What a great sytem... less root disturbance and a perfect fit. I will try that with other things that need to get potted up too. My clem will get mostly shade for a few days to save it from our current 100 degree heat.; then morning sun and I will fertilize in a month as you suggested. I am thrilled you liked my way of planting..Rarely ever have I had one suffer transplant shock...Try it on planting directly into your gardens too!!..Works like a charm...yea some shade to start her off and keeping moist is the key...she will be so happy to have all that soil now to spread her roots and grow grow grow..congrats...Jeanne
