Plants to shade the roots?

What plants do you use to shade the roots? I've got sweet basil seedlings that I need to put out. Can I put them near my clems to shade the roots or does a sweet basil need more water than a clem?

I've got my new baby clems in gallon pots like BoS told me, and all pinched back, on the ground under the roof overhang, which provides some shade from the boiling sun: Comtesse de Bouchaud, Duchess of Albany & Princess Diana.

A recent post from one of you nice experts talked about using vinca, daylilies, Blue Daze or begonias for the needed shade. If sweet basil isn't right, I've had success in the past with bronze-leaved pink begonias ("Gin" is one type) & I could try using them. What about coleus? Are there other favorites that you use? Thanks so much!!
