Pests eating meyer lemons

Something is eating the rind of our meyer lemons. It seems to have happened almost overnight. The fruit is very young, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. There are many small puncture wounds and scratches on the surface. The tree is 5 ft tall and in the ground outside. There is a large ficus hedge just a few feet away. We also have squirels in the area. No fruit has fallen. I have pictures of the damage but I don't know how to post them.
