Not at all. You'll lose fruit bearing at the tips but the pruned branches will bud out next year.

I think it is a good idea to prune all limbs up to a foot above the ground; it allows for air circulation, easier care for the tree and floor sanitation. If you prune them up when they are very young, I would paint the trunks to prevent sunburn.
