Why would you prune the tree on account of it losing it's leaves? What would that accomplish?

It should not have been pruned hard - I can't see the pics so I don't know how heavily it was pruned. A little light pruning would encourage new growth but nothing major. I personally would not even have light pruned it.

The recent growth should not be removed. The tree needs to get energy and for that it needs leaves. The energy it used to create those leaves is like battery power - it is finite. Let it grow how it wants for a few seasons and build its energy stores back up.

Would be good to know the trees history to try to ascertain what made the leaves drop, as we cannot tell without seeing the photo in question
