I grow 2's and 3's together, but treat them all like 3's, pruning way back each early spring. If I were to treat them differently from each other, I think it would be a major hassle; maybe impossible.

Do you think it's too late in the season for me to prune down now? I have one Josephine that needs pruning down as she is only one stalk and this is her second year in the ground.

You can prune Clematis any time during growing season. I would stop pruning 2 months before the first frost.

I agree with Carrie: you can plant group II and III together, but you will have to prune both of them in the same manner. Meaning, you will loose early blooms on the old wood of the group II Clematis.

I will prune down Josephine. I will treat the Earnest Markham and Henryi as a type 3, as EM will flower on new wood for the most part.
