It sounds like a lot of extra work...and, personally, I would think it would lengthen the utlimate time until the plant gets established...most of my plants take extra time once transplanted.

I have dug in potted ones, and too ofen have found only rotted roots. But sometimes there is a shoot or two coming up more slowly than the other clems. I don't dig any further than the green tips down in the pot. I move the pots to a sort of "nursery" area" and fill the pots in with compost mixed soil as the shoots grow up. When they are above the pot about 6 inches I move the pot back to the combination where it had been dug into the soil or a large tub. I intend to cut back and pot either in the ground (or directly in a tub of its own) or a larger pot, depending how full the pot is with roots, when they have finished flowering. And if I don't like the combination, I can try putting it somewhere else.

My 3rd year Sweet Autumn is showing no signs of life. Should I dig down and see what's happening? I have no idea why it's not growing. Last year I was worried about it not growing in April when all my others where sending up shoots. Anyone have any ideas? Should I just replace it now or give it time. I know a lot of you have posted that they can surprise you late in the season but this one grew so well last year and I treated it no differently this year. I'm disappointed because this should have been its year to "leap".
