Growing onions in the Carolinas

Until this year I had always bought onion sets at Lowes and put them out in the early spring. This year I tried buying plants at Lowes and setting them out. Though they were at least twice as expensive, the results were better keeping, larger and tastier onions than I ever had. I would like to try starting the plants from seed inside and then planting outside next spring which would obviously save me alot of $$. Does anyone have experience doing this? If so can you tell me how, when and what types of onions you grow by this method?? Thanks..
