brandyray, you said to wait to prune this next spring? How far back should I go with this one. I have a Romona and another one that I can't remember the name of, but I do prune them in the fall, usually middle of October, and I prune them to about 6-10 inches from the ground.
What is a good fertilzer for them?

Loveflowers, Jackmanii is a type III clematis which means it normally gets trimmed back in winter or early spring. There is no need to trim it back in the fall since trimming it will cause it to try and grow new foliage when it should be going dormant. Ramona is a type II which normally doesn't get trimmed back at all except to prune out dead wood, restrain its growth, or to rejuvenate it.

Any fertilizer that is slow release will work for clematis. I have used slow release 10-10-10 and 13-13-13. Some prefer rose or tomato fertilizer. Others like alfalfa pellets and compost. You can't go wrong as long as you don't use a high nitrogen fertilizer that is quick release as this will stimulate green vegetative growth over flower production.

I just discovered that my boyfriend has pulled up a Jackmanii (from the roots) that I had nurtured from a baby for four years (two summers of drought) then this spring transplanted to his flowerbed so it could twine in with his yellow climbing roses. He thought it was an invasive weed. So, rather than bursting into tears I managed to remain composed and look on Garden Web to see if it is possible to buy fairly mature plants this time of year. This gorgeous photo has given me some hope. thanks.
