Kaffir Lime Minimum Temperature?

I received my kaffir lime from four winds today and promptly transplanted it into gritty mix. For the next couple of nights the low will hover around 50. Is this too cold for my lime or will it be ok?

nope that is just fine. I only worry if I start to get numbers close to low 40's. Some people might get some heartburn at 50 but I dont.

Seriously? The Kaffir lime is that cold sensitive???? I was thinking of buying one as we love Thai food but sheesh had no idea it was that cold sensitive.

I was just saying what temps I prefer to avoid with my container trees. In ground Im sure the Kaffir is fine to high 30's and like all others risky below 32.

Mines faired very well in a pot all winter long with night temps often hovering from the mid 30s to low 40s.

But since this is a recent transplant with possible stress, you may want to give it some protection anyways just to be safe.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I left it outside and it did get down to about 48 last week and it was perfectly fine!

Wow. Thank you for these posts. The info I'd had about this limes was under 50F was a problem! Good to know it can take colder temps than that...

I'm in lower peninsula, west Michigan. Can someone tell of a good source for kaffir lime trees please. I'm also interested in growing lemon grass.

    Thanks

Hi tobybul2! Lemongrass transplants are pretty easy to find at a reputable nursery in the herbs section, at least in my area they are easy to find. As for kaffir lime you can buy them from four winds growers out of California. That's where I got mine and I am very impressed with the quality and health of the tree they sent me! You can also buy them from a place called Logees based in Connecticut. I've never purchased from them but I have heard others say they were happy. Good luck!

Thanks, Kristopher. I have looked at Four Winds and I felt they were kinda costly especially with shipping but maybe that just how its is. I have never ordered plants online.

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet if I ant one bad enough.

I bought mine here.https://lemoncitrustree.com/store/kaffir-lime-trees.html. it is doing well these past four years in NC. I have it potted, and bring it in in winter.

This is a helpful post. I have 2 kaffir lime plants on their own rootstock I received from an Etsy vendor about 2 months ago. I've been reading how this species cannot tolerate temps below 50, so to squeeze as much vigor as I can this season (I live in the DC area), I've been bringing them inside when outdoor temps drop below 55 F. This seems to have worked as the older plant has been pushing out lots of new shoots which are much more fragrant than the older leaves. I'm glad I can leave them outside until temps drop below 40 F, but I suspect leaving them out in the cold will halt the growth I'm looking for.

I think Kaffir lime has a little more cold tolerance than ordinary limes, but how much more I do not know.
