I bought 17 in August and another 17 in September when the sale started, I was so impressed with the roots on those babies. Put them all in gallon pots & dug into the soil (or tubs where the soil was too rocky & hard to dig).

About 2/3s of them started coming up from the roots in April. We had the heaviest snowfall this Winter, leaving the ground solid white from November to March. Even a few warm days were not enough to melt even the shoveled places.

And it wasn't a "one stemmed wonder" that came up. Most pots had 4 to 6 stems arising, which soon leafed out. Rhapsody even has had a fat bud for several weeks now, but only about a foot off the ground.

What delighted me the most was that Mrs N Thompson survived. It was the smallest of the 34, and I didn't have that much hope for her. I have killed bigger plants of her twice before. But her 2 stems are slowly doing well.

In the middle of May I started poking around the ones that hadn't showed up, and was disappointed to see that many of those with such beautiful roots were dark brown, hollow & limp, coming apart at the touch. But this happens to some of my bigger, older ones too. Root rot is my biggest problem.

A few had one more healthy root still attached to the crown, along with the rotten ones. I put them back & recovered them with soil, but so far they have not "recovered". Pardon the pun. I really don't think they are going it make it.

I took pictures of the worse ones & sent a letter to Jerome, but I supposed that he is so busy with new customers he hasn't had time to read it yet or answer.

I don't know how the roots are on this year's crop, but I would recommend Koi Gardens to anyone, especially for late Summer purchases.

Search on this forum for Koi Gardens and you will get numerous hits for this company. Most of the commments have been very positive. The one plant I purchased was well rooted!

I bought three (or maybe 4?) last fall and have been very happy with all of them. The roots were strong and they've all put out multiple happy stems this year. I'm considering ordering more from them.
