Riverside... They have a few groupings of them around the park.

I know they are cheap to buy (in bulk), but i'd rather try them from seed (even cheaper!).

Good stuff! Do all conifer seeds need cold stratification?

Hi Frank,

Looks (to me) like the root is sprawling across the top of the soil and then makes a "J-kink" 90-degrees and then down its going. If the case, lift it with your pocket knife and create a new hole and then drop it in the hole and sort of press on the root to straighten it more as you re-situate it. I can promise you it won't harm that little seedling at all. Right now you're looking at the classic case of a root that has the potential for, girdling and the death of the tree... at a later time.

Good luck getting them to grow fast. It took mine around two-years to be of quart-sized root-systems before I moved that into a one gallon and then into the ground the following year... which was yr-3. Year four is when they will take off.

Thanks for the sprout picture Frank. It was very helpful I wasn't sure if my sprouts were really thujas. Since is been so hard to me to propagate them. Also your method seem pretty good, I think I will try it. Mine took forever to come out, I've already gave up on it, but then. SURPRISE!!, there they were. I think is because I left the clear cover on top, creating the condensation. Lucky me! Thanks again.

Thuja actually does not require stratification. Seeds are ready to germinate immediately, although some don't the first year. BTW, "cold-stratification" is redundant, cold being a key part of all stratification. There is no "warm stratification.
