I have never heard of 2 clematis varieties for sale in one pot. That is something new. I would plant them in separate holes at least 2-3 feet apart. Clematis develope large root systems so I would give them room. If you want to move one later it will be easier also to have the root systems separate. The President is more of a blueish purple that a pinkish purple(like the above photo). It is a very pretty one which I am sure you will like. Here is a photo of mine. Karen

I saw these! at Zehrs here in Waterloo. It is a new thing they have several different "combinations" of 2 different clematis in one container. I didn't buy any because I didn't know enough about clems to be sure about it. I saw Comtesse de Bouchard with something as well. and Niobe with something. It was pretty cool although I think it may be difficult to separate them I took a look at the root ball and they are very much growing "together" in the container. Great price though. I hope they have been smart enough to plant only 2 of the same pruning group together or it could get complicated I imagine.

I have more than a few clematis that are planted so close that would more than be considered having two in the same hole and haven't had an issue doing so. If you consider putting two clematis in the same hole, then each plant still potentially has a 180 degree range where it could grow and not meet up with the other plant's roots. To me that is no different than planting a single clematis up next to the foundation of a house-each condition would mean that the clematis would have a 180 degree of range of growing positions.

enjoy5. They were planted separately this morning and it was not difficult to divide the roots, none broke, although one of stems did. Both of mine are group 2. Also, I didn't dig big holes as previously, my goodness the other holes were almost 3 feet deep x 3 feet wide. Did put in half of the bag of sheep manure in each hole.

nckvilledues. As mentioned I hesitated this time to plant them together as one always disappeared over the years. The only thing didn't know which one was which. It will be fun waiting for the first bloom.
