I actually like the garage door color, but I think I would carry the color over to the pillars as well as some of the trim maybe. I think it is just a bit out of place because there is nothing to echo it on the rest of the house.

I think it would be tough to go a lot darker without it being too close, but not matching the front door color.

I actually like your doors. Too light garage doors are one of my current pet peeves. I so agree with emily. The garage color needs to be used somewhere else as well. even if its just a hint. I like a dark brown but with the light colors of the rest of the house I think in this instance I would make the entire garage feel more like an addition than part of the house.

You have a gorgeous house, but from a design perspective you have 7 exterior colors, (roof colors count), that's a lot for your style house. As you all know, exterior design principles call for at least 3. I think you'll be happier reducing the number, and painting the garage doors your Cabot Trail. Or a gray tone matching the shade of your stone. All of your colors are harmonious, I just think you might have too much of a good thing going on. :) I agree the walnut will call attention to the garage, but my major consideration is a dark color will peel and blister depending on the orientation of your house and your climate. Dark colors keep painters in business.

Paint them as close to the color of the body of the house as possible, they are not something you want to accent. A variation in color will bring the eye to them. The same color as the body will not hide them obviously but will blend in nicely.

I would flip the colour on your columns and the garage door colour - place more emphasis on the front door and less on the garage. Do not go darker on those doors! The front door is what you want to draw attention to. My second vote would be all Cabot. Maybe add a couple urns / topiaries on either side of the front porch too.

BM CC-518 escarpment. it's in the gray family but the tone works with the cabot trail. I aggree that you may however have too many colours going on. you may want to consider repainting your trim the same as the garage. i think your husband is thinking dark brown to match the door but paint is paint and wood is wood. the front door should stand alone.

I would suggest to have a paint match to the front door. I hate to take your husbands side if you want to hear otherwise but the dark color would make the brick surrounding the area look much nicer and it would reduce the amount of colors that you have going on. If you have a pro doing the project you could get the painter to brush or glaze the garage doors just a little to give it an appearance of wood while actually being a painted door.

Yes, I agree with Emily about the darker doors. I would carry the garage door color over to the columns and trim. Two urns with fabulous blooming plants on either side of the front steps and an small outdoor table between the chairs would add interest.

You want the front door to be the focal point so you don't want to paint the garage doors to be the same brown color. Being bigger than the front door that would draw the eye to the garage doors and not to the front entry. Make the garage doors blend into the color of the rest of the house by painting them the color of the trim which should be close to the color of the stonework. In this way, the front door will become the unique and special feature on the front of your home that it is intended to be.

I agree not to match the garage doors with the front door since they will be competing for attention. Perhaps try to match the garage with the greyish stone base.

What about painting the doors the same color as the gray stone? Painting them this matched gray will make them blend in with the entire house.

Their are so many things going on with the house, gables, peaks, moulding, brick, stucco, stone, columns - whew my eyes are getting a workout.. It's beautiful, but i would recommend dialing it down a little - paint the entire place, including the garage doors, one neutral color.

My rule is when looking at the house from the street or main approach you see how much visual weight the garage has. If it appears (linear feet) somewhat equal to or greater than (linear feet) the main floor living space you want the garage to be de emphasized and blend with the architecture. Otherwise it looks like you own a lot more garage than house. Sorry hubby a dark color will tie in with your red brick but make your home and garage look too much like separate buildings. I would either paint the garage doors the base color you have used on the stucco, quickest and easiest but, what I think would be more interesting would be to paint the stucco the same color as the garage doors and leave the trim the lighter color you already have on them. Some paint brands offer a computer program that you scan a picture of your house and play with different colors on your computer screen so you can see what different colors will look like before opening a can. It is hard to tell from your picture but it looks like the colors you chose are nice and go well with both brick colors. If in reality the garage color doesn't go well I still like the idea of your homes base color being darker than the light brick but lighter than the dark brick. Beautiful home.

David has a point to keep the Garage and Front door colours different and better if matched with stone .

C; I vote Cabot Trail. On second viewing, the brick gives a lot of visual weight to the garage, and almost makes it look like it belongs to another house, when viewing only the facade as a whole. Cabot Trail refers the garage back to the house and minimize the emphasis on the garage. Thank you all for explaining your thought processes.

I think you should paint the down pipe above the front door ( just to the left of the window on the second level) in a bright red colour , then no one will notice the many other colours, shapes and textures that have been used on your home :-)

Just kiddingggggg........I agree with Emily , the garage doors look quite ok as they are , and it would help give visual strength to the columns if you darkened them to the same colour as the garage doors . But definitely do not use the front door colour on the garage doors as that would accentuate the two different white arch designs that have been used above garage doors .

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions, which have helped me convince my husband to stick with the Cabot trail (as we've now done) and keep the focus away from the garage doors!! The only other thought was to paint the columns the darker colour that was on the garage doors to sort of balance it all out but again, so many colours...I will finish by adding some tall planters with some nice fall foliage to front of the house. BTW, Landscape & Arch Design Prod....I absolute hate that down pipe!! ;)

If these doors face west or south and are unshaded, you may want to avoid dark color due to thermal deflection, which can cause the door to fit tightly or scrape. This is most pronounced in metal insulated doors - less so with wood doors. This tip also applies to your front entry door. Intense sunlight also can cause degradation of the paint and even the door materials, in extreme situations.

Great decision Carello5. I vote for a darker colour on the columns to bring more emphasis to the front door. Because the door is shadowed under the porch and the brick on the garage is so much darker than the stone, the garage side of the house is still going to get the first look...bring the eye to the entry.

i dont know if you picked out that brick or not, but i think you should paint it. you will never get that garage and house to blend because of the brick. paint it a similar color that is on the house!

Yes, we chose the red brick. Painting it is not an option. Only the face of the house is stucc/stone - the sides and back of the house is all red brick (same as garage)...Mackenzie Austin Design - I like your suggestion!

Hi Corello5 - Don't you just hate it when a builder's draftsperson doesn't pay attention to such a simple detail as darn down pipes !............but maybe they were just too busy trying to design so many other lines and details to your home's front , that they thought that no one would notice the downpipe ?
But don't worry , I won't tell a single soul about it , its just our secret ;-)

Landscape And Arch Design....as I said in an earlier post we have painted the garage doors the Cabot Trail and when and if the down pipes issue becomes a big concern we will re-post for your repeated opinion regarding that matter...until then keep the secret tight and try not to dwell on it for too long ;-) Thanks again everyone for your suggestions.
