Plant now or hold until fall?

Got a big strong Polish Spirit in 1-gal pot. Some books say mid-summer is bad time to plant; other books say plant immediately upon buying. I've also read on this forum to put smaller plants into bigger pots to develop roots, then plant in fall.

What should I do with this guy? It has about 5 stems, very hearty. I wanted to put it next to the lamp post (full/partial sun). (And is a PS good for a lamp post anyway?)

No, PS isn't good for a lamp post because it gets so big. You are looking at a huge vigorous vine in three years. Huge. I don't grow this one but I think it gets 10-15' tall and almost as wide. It is a monster.

I plant now because here, they are better off in the ground than in a pot over summer but I do hard prune when I plant.
