Harlow Carr

I agree with Marie, the mislabeled one is definitely Harlow Carr and I have loved it since purchasing it several years ago. The top flower looks like a purple type II. There are quite a few of them and I won't even venture a guess.

Hi nckvilledudes & marie, Thanks so much for the ID on Harlow Carr. I'll have to check it out on COTW and read up on it.
A gardening friend of mine just suggested that perhaps I should mention that the underside of the top one's petals have a white stripe. Does that help a little? Oh, and also I prune it back as a type III in late winter/early spring, and it just started blooming beginning of July, and usually continues through August. Any more ideas? Thanks a lot,

Glad to be of help Judith. As for your purple one, there are just too many type IIs (and I think that is what you have based on your treatment of it as a type III and when it blooms for you) that I could not even venture to guess. You might want to visit Clematis on the Web and do a search for purple tepals and see what comes up.

Well, I searched (thanks for the link) and I came up with Serenata, a type II, 1960 (Sweden). When I looked at the photo, I realized that mine also has a very faint reddish bar (like Serenata),so maybe this is the one. I'm going to prune lightly so as to have some old wood, and see if I can get blooms earlier. Thanks so much for your help

The President is a very common purple type II.

Glad to be of help Judith. COTW is a great place to search for those unknown clematis that we all seem to end up with. It could be the President as BorS suggests, but either way both are type IIs!
