I've answered this question twice now yet my computer keeps glitching and not posting :-/ I have them both. I treat them both as type 3's. they both bloom for me without issue except they bloom a little later than if I hadn't cut them. I'd cut them both down to the ground now and again in the spring. I'd cut it every year and treat them both as type 3's. Many ppl treat type 2's as 3's. The only time it's an issue is on *some* type 2's that have double flowers. Some will only flower double on old wood. Not a problem with these for you. Good luck! I'm sure they'll be beautiful for you again next year :)

Thanks so much for responding to my question. I appreciate the input from someone who has practical experience with the same plants. I'll get out there and start clipping!

They don't have a disease that is just build up of old dead stems.

Cutting them to about a foot off the ground next early spring will solve the problem.
