Mine only took two to stunning. That fence is going to be spectacular.

I hope so. It faces north, so that makes me worry just a little because they will only get direct sunlight once they grow to the top of the fenceline.

Do I need to be worried?

Yes, with Rose Tone and compost. Only once though. I forget.

I hard pruned when I planted in the late summer. I hard pruned again the following spring. I pinched until they started blooming. I hard pruned this spring and pinched too. I'll have to go take a picture, I can't believe how big they are.

Just a warning that I wish I'd been given: be careful not to mound or compost around your fence posts, that you can always see the concrete that they're in, otherwise they can rot because of the moisture you'll be giving the plants. This happened to me, and though it seems obvious it happened within 6 or so years after getting a new fence.

However, PC will easily get above that fence soon; no need to worry about that!

Thanks neighbor in Chicago! I went out today and pruned my clems, AND pulled the mulch back from my fence posts. I kind of regret mulching this year - at least with the larger wood chips that I used. I think next year I'll get the shredded mulch - easier to work with.
