Jennypat, google Clematis Jackmanii. They produce beautiful large purplish blue flowers, and is easy to grow.

Jenny, in the warmer zones My Angel is a very vigorous plant that tends to sucker and spread itself around. Several people I know in colder climates like yours don't have this issue. My Angel is a clematis with very beautiful flowers and I may try growing it again in my garden in an area where its rampant growth might not be as much of an issue. My Angel is probably the closest thing to orange you will get in a clematis, although I would consider it more yellow with orangish overtones on the backside of the sepals.

For purple, I would go with what northtexasdude suggests (Jackmanii) or Polish Spirit. Both have great purple blooms with Jackmanii having larger blooms and PS having smaller but just as wonderfully purple flowers.

Thanks! I already have a couple Jackmanii in another area in my yard. This will be the first year for them! Anyway I was hoping to do something different in this garden. The more I think on it, I might just do the one clematis! But use the purple in the garden around it. Things like May Night salvia, some delphiniums etc. Along with some more orange flowers.
