There are some I prune like 3's every few years too.

I simplify even more :-) I reduce the pruning groups down to 2 - hard prune or no prune! I have entirely too many clematis and far too little time to finesse pruning according to the 3 (or even 4) recommended groupings. It may not work well for those in more extreme climate zones than mine, but I have not found hard pruning group 2's to be a problem. They bloom equally as well for me if perhaps just a bit later.

And then there are the years (like this one) when I don't get around to pruning at all. That also doesn't seem to be a problem either, except that my SAC is about to devour half my garden :-) Not gonna repeat that omission again!

I only worry about new or scraggly ones. About a third of my Clems were rescues from former career and were in bad shape when I brought them home.

The older/thriving ones I either prune hard or I don't.

Mostly, I don't. Until they really need it. Afraid to put a SAC or a Montana in my tiny Portland garden.

I prune many of the so called type IIs as type IIIs and have great success in doing so. The rules are guidelines as both gardengal and I have both espoused on this forum many times and are not meant to be written in stone. The only way to know for certain the pruning classes for any clematis are to experiment and see what works for you. You might be surprised what can be done with most clematis and it won't be what is written in books!

I have a Ramona that has gotten very tangled and out of control. Would I do it any permanent harm if I just hard prune it down to 12" next Spring and give it a new start?

No, it won't. That is what I did to my Ramona last spring. It actually grew bigger and had more flowers than ever before.
