Some people cut off the seed pods, hoping to encourage the clematis to bloom more, but I'm not sure it really matters except perhaps with Class II clematis (Jackmanii is Class III). I rather like the look of the seed pod myself.

For my Jackmanii (superba also), I wait until I see new growth during the winter (usually in February) and then prune it back to about a foot from the ground. I may feed it at that time, or a bit later.

However, if the vine has turned brown and is definitely dead, I cut it off anytime I see it, just so I don't have to look at brown, dead stuff.
