How to install a horizontal batten with the hardieboard?

Just wondering about water instrusion - this is not a configuration I see encouraged or outlined, am worried my contractor will know how to do this!!! Thanks, great project!

The battens have a slight bevel along the top edge and have a very thick bead of non-drying caulk on top that was smoothed into place by hand to be sure there were no gaps. The gaps between the panels were first caulked and sealed before the battens were glued and nailed into place. I first did this detail 12 years ago on another home that has yet to be repainted with absolutely no issues to date.

Thanks a bunch, that is a great look. Where is this house - what is the climate. wondering if this would also work with colder environment

The house is in Portland Oregon which does on occasion get temperatures below freezing for extended periods, and as you may know is very wet during the Winter and Spring.

Lincoln county inspector and hardie corp will not pass my house with this application, I have to install z flashing to pass the final inspection,
How did you get around that one???
