I would definitely suggest moving to a bigger pot and planting in the ground, that way the plant can continue to grow in safe surroundings, until you have a permanent place for it, even if only next Spring.

I suppose it would depend upon what size pots they are in now. One gallon would be super for something that came in a 4" pot like HD or Lowes sells. But if it was from a nursery that used a slightly less than 1 gallon pot, I would check the size of the rootball before deciding 1 gallon or 2. If the "less than a gallon" pot is full of roots I would definitely go larger before planting the pot.

Be sure you have good drainage and mulch well after the ground is frozen.
