There are hundreds of varieties. Do you have a photo that you could post? If not you can go to Clematis on the web. Go to search, where it says sepal color put in red. If this is an early blooming variety, then go to pruning group and put group 2 in and hit search. All the names that come up that have a + have a photo. You can go through the photo's and see if you can find yours.

Oldroser, I think my Niobe bloomed before Jackmanii. It's not a "red" red though.

Your original post didn't disappear. It just moved down the page. As I said in that post when I responded--way too many possibilities for an accurate ID. A picture would be nice.

I second Niobe. It is a beautiful deep red & blooms for a long time in my yard. She is also one of the first to start blooming. Another early bloomer for me is Ville de Lyon but she is not red.
