Robin..if you are just wanting somewhere to put them until next Spring..You can dig a hole and drop the pot into the ground for winter and then pull the pot up this coming spring and plant in it's new home...If you see roots coming out of the bottom then you might need to repot them up to one size larger..and plant it 2-4 inches in the new pot...putting some bonemeal in with the soil...make sure you keep it moist...clematis roots like to stay moist...Hope this helps...Jeanne

Thank you for the info Jeanne. Will follow your suggestions. Picked up 6 plants at Lowes for $2.75 each. They are in 1 gallon containers and look healthy. Most of them had the stapled labels yanked out and replaced. Only 2 were stapled in place. I have never planted clematis but have learned some by searching the internet. Plan to dig 18x18" holes, use lots of compost,a cup of bonemeal, bury them 3" below soil surface and keep the roots cool with creeping thyme. I may need help with IDing ( if there such a word. ) Will submit photos if I need help. Thanks again Jeanne.
