No The tree will prune itself. Pics please

Well, the tree will not prune itself. Have not seen that happen, yet. Photos will help us to determine what might need to be done. I doubt it will be pruning, unless you have a tall, lanky single leader tree form. Most likely, to promote new growth, good potting medium, regular fertilizing and lots of sunshine, outdoors if possible, will be the solution. But, we cannot really tell you without seeing your tree.

So, that's my tangerine tree. It used to look like this:

before this years growth spurt. So, it just EXPLODED this year.

The first picture is my tangerine tree, the second picture is my lemon tree.

Let it keep bushing out....those leaves make food and energy, and increase the overall vitality of the tree. Looks good.

Citrus trees store their energy in their leaves and will draw on them before it self prunes that branch. If the tree does well those leave may produce food for more than a year before sacrificing that branch.

Hi Steve, at what point should the apical bud/stem be pinched/bent to promote branching? I have a few seedlings started in June that are getting pretty leggy. Should I wait till they go back outside this spring? Thanks for your time!

I had one seedling that was 18 inches tall and I folded the top 4 inches over with out killing the top so the leaves would still produce food. I would also be inclined to wait till spring. Can you post pictures of your seedlings.

18”...I believe I was premature in asking the question. I will wait a little (lot) longer before revisiting.
