Ellix...I think you might want to "rethink" your decision to plant an "Evergreen" clematis once you really what they are all about..Evergreens such as the Armandii will grow quite large but will bloom only once...I will put a link for you to read before deciding...

I grow Pruning group 3's with my Climbing Roses..and a great contrast that you would enjoy would maybe be something like "Etoile Violette","Ville de Lyon"..Even "Jackmanii"
These viticellas aka Hard prune group 3 give me about 3-4 bloom periods during a growing season....Jeanne

As advised, evergreen Clems are not good candidates to plant with others. They are too big and too agressive.

The roses aren't evergreen either. I'm a huge fan of Knock Outs after planting the original this year. Not the most gorgeous flowers in the rose world but what an easy keeper.

Thanks for the resposes. I have been reading on the net for a while now and have ended up falling for clematis. I am ordering about 10 - but not for this spot. I am looking at 'lemmon bells' and 'ourika vally' an evergreen that may still be too much--(what do you think?)as I cannot find the width of it's growing habit, I think the height would be ok. I also found 'repens finet & Gagnepain' - just lovely and would like to buy, it is small. Does anyone know where I can find this? 'Constance' seems to be most beautiful but not sure if it will blend with the pink of the rose. I have a place I need a clematis just behind this arbor up on the wall of the house that may be nice but would get very little sun - actually only morning sun but bright light the rest of the day.

Hmmmm....you certainly have developed an eye for the unusual and hard to find! If your preference is still evergreen, then 'Ourika Valley' should work well, although pruning is not suggested for C. cirrhosa, ditto the chiisanensis (Lemon Bells). You might want to consider C. cirrhosa 'Freckles" as well, as it has maroon spotting against the yellow that would nicely accent the rose and should be quite a bit easier to locate. For a lemony colored large flowering hybrid, look for 'Guernsey Cream' - rather shade tolerant.

According to Joycreek Cirrhosa "Ourika Valley" grows 9-12 feet. They usually carry it but happen to be out.

'repens finet & Gagnepain' . To use that site to research height etc..just go to main page and Click on "Clematis A-Z" and then click on the first letter of the name of the clematis ..also use the search to research either color, pruning, bloom times etc

Thanks for the responses, I like the idea of the Viticellas with no problems and easy pruning. I just didn't really want to go into the purple or reds.
I did see Repens finet& Gagnepain on the COTW. I am looking for experienced info on it and can only find the basics-and few of them. Jeanne I ment to tell you thanks for putting the pic of "brite eyes" in this post. I have no idea how to do anything like that. Indeed I have been looking at Freckles and like it very much. Boy are there a lot of beutiful choices out there - it's like a huge candy store.
